60 Water Companies in the World

This list names 60 of the world's largest and best-known water companies: the utilities that run drinking water and wastewater services for cities, regions and whole countries, and the operators that work across borders. Each line says what the company does in water and gives one figure about its size or work, such as the people it serves, its customers, its revenue or its capacity.

The companies are grouped by region, not ranked, because the figures are not like for like: one line gives customers served, another revenue or plants, and each carries its own year. Bottled water brands and equipment makers are left out; the makers of treatment, metering and pumping equipment are on the water technology companies list.

United States and Canada

1 American Water Works Company American Water Works is the largest regulated water and wastewater utility in the United States, serving more than 14 million people in 14 states and on 18 military installations.
2 American States Water Company American States Water supplies water through its regulated utilities and contracts to run systems on military bases; its utilities served 265,142 water customers at December 31, 2025.
3 Essential Utilities Essential Utilities provides regulated water and wastewater utility services to communities, serving 5.5 million people and operating 236 wastewater systems.
4 H2O America H2O America owns four regional water utilities, Connecticut Water, Maine Water, San Jose Water and Texas Water, and serves more than 1.6 million people.
5 Quadvest Quadvest is one of the largest water and wastewater utilities in Texas, with over 47,000 active connections and over 89,000 more under contract and pending development.
6 EPCOR EPCOR treats drinking water and wastewater and delivers water; its two Edmonton plants, E.L. Smith and Rossdale, treat 140,000 megalitres of water each year.
7 SaskWater SaskWater is a Saskatchewan utility that provides professional water and wastewater services to 104 communities through SaskWater-owned and customer-owned infrastructure.
8 Eau de Montréal Eau de Montréal produces drinking water and treats wastewater for the city, and its plants produce 1.6 billion liters of drinking water every day, equal to 426 Olympic-size swimming pools.

United Kingdom and Ireland

9 Thames Water Thames Water supplies drinking water and treats wastewater for customers across London and the Thames Valley, and it serves 16.4 million customers.
10 Affinity Water Affinity Water supplies drinking water to customers and businesses across southeast England, serving 3.99 million customers and supplying 943 megalitres a day through 17,042 kilometers of mains.
11 Northumbrian Water Northumbrian Water provides water and wastewater services to 2.7 million people in North East England, and water services to 1.8 million people in Essex.
12 South West Water South West Water looks after the water and wastewater services for 1.8 million customers across Cornwall, Devon, the Isles of Scilly and parts of Dorset and Somerset.
13 United Utilities United Utilities supplies drinking water and treats wastewater in North West England, delivering an average of 1.8 billion liters of drinking water a day to around 8 million people.
14 Yorkshire Water Yorkshire Water supplies water and wastewater services to over 5 million people and 140,000 business properties, and it looks after the essential infrastructure of the Yorkshire region.
15 Wessex Water Wessex Water supplies water and treats wastewater for homes and businesses, delivering more than 282 million liters of water every day to 1.4 million customers and 44,000 businesses.
16 Severn Trent Severn Trent supplies clean water and treats wastewater for households and businesses, and serves 4.7 million households and businesses in its region.
17 Scottish Water Scottish Water provides public drinking water and wastewater services across Scotland, supplying 1.49 billion liters of water a day and treating 1.07 billion liters of wastewater daily.
18 Northern Ireland Water Northern Ireland Water, a government-owned company set up in April 2007, supplies 560 million liters of clean water a day to almost 1.8 million people.
19 Uisce Éireann Uisce Éireann provides drinking water and collects, treats and returns wastewater safely in Ireland, operating over 1,000 wastewater treatment plants and over 2,200 wastewater pumping stations.
20 South Staffs Water South Staffs Water supplies high quality drinking water to approximately 1.3 million people and approximately 35,000 commercial customers in the West Midlands and South Staffordshire.
21 Portsmouth Water Portsmouth Water supplies clean drinking water across Hampshire and West Sussex to a population of 740,000, drawing on 21 water sources over an area of 868 square kilometers.

Continental Europe and global operators

22 Veolia Veolia manages drinking water production, distribution, wastewater treatment and sanitation; in 2025 the group served 110 million people with drinking water and 97 million with sanitation.
23 Suez SUEZ provides drinking water and sanitation services worldwide; in 2025 it supplied drinking water to 67 million people and sanitation services to more than 36 million people.
24 Aguas de Barcelona Aïgues de Barcelona manages the whole urban water cycle in the Barcelona metropolitan area and offers its service to nearly 3 million people in the municipalities there.
25 Aqualia Aqualia manages municipal drinking water, sewerage and wastewater treatment services; it serves 44,985,072 people in 19 countries and 2,347 municipalities.
26 ACEA ACEA manages the integrated water service in Italy and abroad, serving 10 million people across 8 Italian regions and another 10 million people in Latin America.
27 Hera Group Hera Group runs aqueduct, sewerage and wastewater treatment services in Italy; in 2020 its integrated water service reached 3.6 million residents in 227 municipalities.
28 Águas de Portugal (Grupo AdP) Águas de Portugal manages urban drinking water supply, wastewater collection, treatment and reuse through its companies, which serve about 80% of the Portuguese population.
29 Aquafin Aquafin treats wastewater and manages sewerage across Flanders in Belgium, and it treats the wastewater of almost 88% of the people in Flanders before returning it to nature.
30 VIVAQUA VIVAQUA produces and distributes drinking water and manages the sewers in Brussels, producing approximately 131 million cubic meters of drinking water each year.
31 HOFOR HOFOR supplies drinking water and manages wastewater for Greater Copenhagen, and its waterworks supply healthy drinking water to around 1 million people in the metropolitan area.
32 Stockholm Vatten och Avfall Stockholm Vatten och Avfall produces drinking water at the Norsborg and Lovö waterworks for Stockholm, and about 410,000 cubic meters of drinking water are produced each day.

Asia, the Middle East and Oceania

33 China Water Affairs Group Limited China Water Affairs Group supplies city water and treats sewage; its city water supply business serves more than 30 million people through about 151,000 km of water pipelines.
34 ACWA Power ACWA Power develops and operates desalination and power plants, and its portfolio has 8.1 million cubic meters a day of desalinated water production capacity.
35 Manila Water Company Manila Water provides water supply, wastewater and sanitation services; in 2024 it served 9,327,986 people with water through 1,324,737 water service connections.
36 Metro Pacific Water Metro Pacific Water develops, owns and operates water supply, treatment and wastewater infrastructure, with a maximum potential capacity of 962 MLD and more than 700 projects completed.
37 China Water Industry Group Limited China Water Industry Group treats wastewater and provides environmental protection services; in 2025 its sewage treatment business treated 23,508,458 tonnes of sewage at three projects in operation.
38 China Everbright Water Limited China Everbright Water treats municipal and industrial wastewater and manages water-environment projects; as at 31 December 2025 it held 172 environmental protection projects with about RMB31.85 billion invested.
39 National Water Company National Water Company serves Saudi Arabia; in 2024 it distributed over 3.7 billion cubic meters of drinking water and treated more than 2.1 billion cubic meters of wastewater.
40 EtihadWE EtihadWE produces, transmits and distributes water across the Northern Emirates, with a network of 8,000 kilometers of water pipelines and water storage capacity of about 600 million gallons.
41 Sydney Water Sydney Water provides water, wastewater, recycled water and some stormwater services, delivering essential water services to 5,401,000 people across Greater Sydney, the Blue Mountains and the Illawarra.
42 SPML Infra Limited SPML Infra builds drinking water treatment, transmission, storage and distribution infrastructure and provides clean drinking water to over 50 million people across India.
43 Urban Utilities Urban Utilities distributes drinking and recycled water and provides wastewater services; it serves 1.6 million customers and supplied 140,593 ML of drinking water.
44 Hunter Water Hunter Water supplies drinking water, recycled water, wastewater and stormwater services, with drinking water reaching around 650,000 people in the Lower Hunter region of New South Wales.
45 Yarra Valley Water Yarra Valley Water provides water, recycled water and sewerage services, maintaining and operating over 21,000 kilometers of mains, 50 water storage tanks and 9 sewage treatment plants.
46 Watercare Watercare supplies drinking water and collects, treats and discharges wastewater for Auckland, serving 1.7 million people from Wellsford to Tuakau.
47 Guangdong Investment Limited Guangdong Investment supplies water and treats wastewater through plants in China; its Other Water Resources Projects had designed water supply capacity of 16,595,200 tons per day at 30 June 2025.
48 Tianjin Capital Environmental Protection Group Co., Ltd. Tianjin Capital Environmental Protection Group provides wastewater treatment, recycled water and tap water, and had water-business capacity of 6,323,400 cubic meters per day in 2024.
49 Shanghai SIIC Environment Holdings Ltd. Shanghai SIIC Environment provides wastewater treatment, water supply and sludge treatment; at the end of 2023 it managed about 250 projects in China with 13.16 million tons per day.
50 Metropolitan Waterworks Authority Metropolitan Waterworks Authority supplies and distributes tap water in Bangkok, Nonthaburi and Samut Prakan, and had 2,558,418 consumer connections in 2022.

Latin America and Africa

51 Aguas Andinas Aguas Andinas supplies drinking water and collects and treats wastewater for Santiago, and its La Farfana plant treats 50% of the wastewater of the city.
52 Empresas Públicas de Medellín Empresas Públicas de Medellín supplies drinking water and treats wastewater in Colombia, and in 2024 it had 1,446,315 customers for its drinking water service.
53 Rand Water Rand Water is the largest bulk water utility in Africa, providing bulk potable water to more than 11 million people across an area of 18,000 km2.
54 Holding Company for Water and Wastewater Egypt's Holding Company for Water and Wastewater provides drinking water and wastewater collection and treatment through 24 affiliated companies, with a served population of 83 million.
55 ONEE ONEE produces and distributes drinking water and provides sanitation in Morocco; in 2021 it produced 1.3 billion cubic meters of water, carried over about 14,100 km of adductor systems.
56 Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company supplies water and provides sewerage services to Nairobi residents, and its customer base rose to 250,667 customers in 2023/2024.
57 NWSC Uganda Uganda's National Water and Sewerage Corporation provides urban water supply and sewerage services; as at 30 June 2021 it operated in 258 towns and served 775,794 water subscribers.
58 Magalies Water Magalies Water supplies bulk potable water to municipalities and other water service authorities in South Africa, with services spanning 42,000 square kilometers across North West, Limpopo and Gauteng.
59 CAESB CAESB supplies drinking water and collects and treats wastewater in Brazil's Federal District; in 2024 water service reached 99% of the population and 100% of collected sewage was treated.
60 Aguas Nuevas Aguas Nuevas provides drinking water, sewer collection and wastewater treatment services in Chile, with customers in 59 localities across the country.
