A household's water bill pays for the water that comes into the home and for the sewage that goes away. The bill depends on which company serves the home: bills vary across England and Wales with geography, population and the investment each region needs.

The table ranks the 11 water and wastewater companies in England and Wales by the average household bill for 2026-27, which starts in April 2026. Southern Water's average bill is the highest at £759 and Northumbrian Water's the lowest at £535, against a national average of £639. The page also lists the water-only companies, whose bills are smaller.

What the numbers mean

The average bill is not what every household pays. Bills vary within a company's region, depend on whether the home has a water meter, and are reduced for customers who get financial support: around 2.5 million households are expected to receive support in 2026-27, with an average discount of around 40%.

A high bill is not the same as a bad company. Bills reflect how much investment each company is funding and what its region costs to serve. Southern Water charges the most, £759, and South West Water is next at £740; Thames Water's bill is close to the national average at £658 and rises by only £3.
