American Water Charitable Foundation has awarded $50,000 in workforce readiness and STEM education grants to five nonprofit organizations serving communities supplied by Maryland American Water. The funding supports career readiness, STEM education and workforce development programs across Maryland. Maryland American Water provides water service to approximately 32,000 people. The awards form part of the Foundation’s Keep Communities Flowing Grant Program, which focuses on Water, People and Communities.

Five Maryland Grant Recipients

The recipients are Nature Worx Inc.; REACT (Robotics and Engineering in Allegany County - Together, Inc.); Evergreen Heritage Center; Public Library Association of Annapolis; and Harford County Public Library Foundation. The grant program supports career readiness, financial and business literacy, positive youth development, STEM education and access to high-quality learning.

Phil Hosmer, Executive Director, Nature Worx, stated:

“We are grateful for the continued support from the American Water Charitable Foundation. This grant will allow Nature Worx to reach hundreds of young people across Central Maryland with hands-on environmental education. By inspiring the next generation to become thoughtful stewards of our natural world, this partnership helps ensure a healthier, more sustainable future for our communities.”

Workforce Development Focus

The funding links community education programs with local workforce preparation, giving students and young adults access to career exploration and learning opportunities. Maryland American Water is a subsidiary of American Water, which operates regulated water and wastewater services in 14 states and on 19 military installations.

Laura Runkle, President, Maryland American Water, noted:

“Investing in education and workforce development aligns with the values of American Water. A well-prepared workforce not only opens doors for individuals but also strengthens the communities they live in. When students and young adults have access to quality STEM education and career readiness programs, they gain the skills and confidence needed to pursue meaningful careers and contribute to the local economy.”

Foundation Funding Record

Since 2012, the American Water Charitable Foundation has invested more than $25 million through grants and matching gifts for eligible organizations in communities served by American Water. The Foundation is funded by American Water shareholders and has no impact on customer rates.

Carrie Williams, President, American Water Charitable Foundation, said:

“The American Water Charitable Foundation is proud to partner with organizations across Maryland that are helping prepare students and young adults for future success. Through these grants, we are investing in programs that expand access to education, career exploration and workforce readiness opportunities.”
