New Jersey American Water Completes Montague Purchase
New Jersey American Water adds approximately 810 water and 270 wastewater customer connections through its Montague system acquisition.

New Jersey American Water has completed its purchase of Montague Sewer & Water Company’s water and wastewater systems, adding about 810 water and 270 wastewater customer connections. The utility acquired the systems from Nexus Regulated Utilities, LLC, a subsidiary of Nexus Water Group, Inc. The transaction closed June 1, 2026, after applicable state regulatory commissions and government entities approved the purchase by May 21. Two former Montague Sewer & Water employees have also joined New Jersey American Water’s operations team.
Montague Systems Join Utility
The acquisition brings Montague customers into New Jersey American Water’s service footprint and adds local operating experience through the two employees who previously served the systems. The company said customers will receive transition information by mail in the coming weeks.
Mark McDonough, President at New Jersey American Water, said:
“On behalf of our entire team, we are delighted to welcome our new customers and new employees to the New Jersey American Water family. We look forward to serving our new customers and helping to ensure a smooth transition by relying on the expertise of local employees who know these operations best. Our team is committed to providing safe, clean, reliable, and affordable water and wastewater services to the communities we serve.”
Customer Transition Information
Montague customers can now find account and service transition details through a dedicated webpage. They will also be able to use the utility’s MyWater online account management portal, flexible payment options and customer assistance programs for qualifying customers.
Part Of Eight State Purchase
The Montague closing forms part of American Water Works Company, Inc.’s agreement, announced May 19, 2025, to acquire Nexus Water Group systems in eight states. New Jersey American Water serves approximately 3 million people through water and wastewater operations in the state.
