BKF has acquired Waterways Consulting, Inc., a water resource engineering firm focused on ecological restoration and nature-based design. The deal pairs Waterways’ ecological expertise with BKF’s 110-year multidisciplinary civil engineering legacy. Waterways operates from regional hubs in Santa Cruz, Calif., and Portland, Ore., with a team recognized for stream restoration, fish passage design, dam removal and watershed planning. The acquisition expands BKF’s capabilities in ecological restoration and water resilience. It also supports the firm’s ongoing transition to a full-service infrastructure leader in the Western United States.

Building a Watershed Scale Practice

The acquisition directly complements BKF’s recent integration of Lotus Water, strengthening the company’s water resilience practice. Lotus Water specializes in urban water systems and stormwater management, while Waterways delivers natural habitat and ecosystem restoration design. Together, the two give BKF a well-rounded offering: integrated, watershed-scale solutions across California and the Pacific Northwest, bringing the built and natural environments into better balance.

Darren Riegler, President and CEO at BKF, said:

“Our clients are increasingly looking for integrated solutions to address their most complex environmental and water resilience challenges. By bringing Waterways' talented team and specialized expertise into BKF, we can deliver even greater value throughout the entire project lifecycle.”

“We're also excited about the opportunities this creates for our people to learn from one another, collaborate across disciplines, and continue growing together.”

Continuity for Waterways Clients

Waterways clients keep their trusted project leadership, project teams and established points of contact. They also gain access to BKF’s broader range of civil engineering, land surveying and construction management resources.

John Dvorsky, Owner and Principal Scientist at Waterways, shared:

“Alongside BKF, our commitment to the environment, our clients, and our people is stronger than ever, with the expanded depth needed to work on the West Coast's most critical water projects.”

Two Regional Hubs Ready to Grow

Matt Weld, Owner and Principal Engineer at Waterways, stated:

“Our teams in Santa Cruz and Portland are ready to collaboratively take on new challenges and offer their expertise to BKF's existing client base.”
