Repairs were recently completed on the main water storage tank at EUROLAMP’s logistics and distribution center in Thessaloniki, Greece, where the project’s construction company and an application crew used crystalline waterproofing products from Penetron. The underground reinforced concrete tank had shown substantial deterioration despite being recently cast, which Theodor Mentzikofakis of Penetron Hellas attributed to an inadequate concrete mix. EUROLAMP’s facility serves customers in Greece, Cyprus and more than 30 countries across the EU and beyond. The project applied the Penetron System across the tank’s interior to restore its integrity and provide long-term durability for the reinforced concrete structure.

Tank Repair Scope

The repair work covered the walls, floor and ceiling of the water storage tank. Surface preparation used high-pressure hydro-blasting to clean the concrete substrate and open tie-rod holes, honeycombed areas and construction joints between the floor slab, walls and ceiling.

PENETRON was applied as a bonding slurry to the prepared surfaces, followed by PENECRETE MORTAR to fill cracks and voids. A final PENETRON application covered the interior of the tank.

Theodor Mentzikofakis, Managing Director and Partner of Penetron Hellas, said:

“At Eurolamp's main facility in Thessaloniki, the primary water storage tank, although recently cast, showed substantial deterioration caused by an inadequate concrete mix. The company decided to undertake a comprehensive repair of the underground concrete structure to prevent further issues.”

Protection at Pipe Penetrations

PENEBAR SW 45 RAPID TYPE A swellable waterstop strips were installed around water pipe penetrations with PENEBAR PRIMER. The repair team also added PENETRON ADMIX to concrete used to recast affected sections.

Theodor Mentzikofakis, Managing Director and Partner of Penetron Hellas, added:

“Once treated with the Penetron System, concrete becomes impermeable and can self-seal hairline cracks up to 0.5 mm. This enables the Eurolamp tank to resist water and moisture ingress, even under the constant hydrostatic pressure typical of water storage applications.”

Water Storage Resilience

The completed work gives EUROLAMP a repaired and waterproofed storage asset at its Thessaloniki distribution center. The project focused on restoring the tank’s concrete surfaces, construction joints and pipe penetrations.
