American Water and the City of Camden marked the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks by installing 2,977 flags at RCA Pier Park in Camden, New Jersey. Each flag honors a life lost in the 2001 attacks. The utility, city employees and first responders joined a ceremonial program that included a wreath dedication, moment of silence and siren salute. The display will remain in place for about one week before being donated to Camden County Veteran Affairs.

Flags Installed at RCA Pier Park

The memorial was installed at the park adjacent to American Water’s headquarters. American Water and City of Camden employee volunteers worked alongside first responders to place the flags, which will later be used at veterans cemeteries, Veterans Day observances and other commemorative events.

John Griffith, President and CEO at American Water, said:

“On the 25th anniversary of September 11, American Water joins the Camden community in our sixth-year lining RCA Pier Park with 2,977 flags, one in honor of each life lost. As we reflect on the significance of this day, we also express our gratitude to the first responders whose bravery, sacrifice and dedication to protecting others, then and now, continue to serve and safeguard our communities every day, reflecting the very best of public service.”

Camden Community Remembrance

The flag memorial serves as a moment of reflection and remembrance in honor of the lives lost, survivors, their families and first responders. The annual flag display is in its sixth year.

Camden Mayor Victor G. Carstarphen said:

“The City of Camden and its partners take great pride in joining with communities across the nation on this solemn day of remembrance for those lost on September 11, 2001. It's hard to believe that twenty-five years have passed since the tragic events of 9/11. As I look back, I can still vividly recall memories and how this difficult moment tested our nation's resolve. The tragedy ultimately united us as Americans. I feel it's important that we reflect on the attacks, the recovery efforts, and on the years of miliary actions which followed. We must never forget that despite the tragedy, our nation managed to mend and make it through these tough times together. That will always be a lasting legacy and inspirational message.”

Flags Support Veterans Events

After the display closes, Camden County Veteran Affairs will retain the flags for commemorative use throughout the year. The reuse gives the memorial a continuing role in local veterans observances.

Colleen Bianco Bezich, Camden County Commissioner, Liaison to the Office of Veteran Affairs, said:

“The 2,977 flags displayed at RCA Pier Park are a powerful tribute to the lives lost on September 11 and a reminder of the courage and sacrifice shown by first responders, service members and countless Americans in the days and years that followed. We are honored to preserve these flags and give them renewed purpose in our veterans cemeteries, carrying forward the shared values of remembrance, service and unity.”
